The Zhongnan Section social housing building is located in Nangang District's Jiuzhuangli area, which contains a large amount of land under conservation, as well as parks and libraries, providing an abundance of leisure space. Development of this area has been influenced by the nearby Academia Sinica, which includes living quarters for its researchers, and the height of other buildings in the area has been kept within the approximate four stories of these dormitories. Local residents are welcomed to use Academia Sinica's public facilities, which has helped to create a neighborly connection between the institution and local residents.
This kind of lifestyle framework makes it possible for the Zhongnan Section social housing project to satisfy residential density quotas, as well as connect with local community networks. The following features were integrated into the building’s spaceplan:
1. Ground Floor Shops and Facilities—The ground floor is designed as an open and diversified space for residents, including those of the surrounding community, with an open plan that encourages strolling.
2. Spaces on Middle Floors Utilized as Common Areas—Floors one through five have terraces and recessed spaces that are decorated with plants and can serve a variety of functions, such as reading rooms or meeting areas. While they are open to the outside, ample shading is provided.
3. Rooftop Garden and Common Dining Area.
4. Studios and Mixed Housing Types—Taking the dormitory style living at Academia Sinica into consideration, single living and larger residences are on separate floors. Floors two to four have a greater number of smaller units along with more common space to increase interaction opportunities for younger residents. Floors six to fifteen have three different types of units.
Design considerations for this project aim to undo negative connotations of social housing, and the building and its interiors come together to form complete living spaces.
